Sydney Allard was an innovative engineer and garage owner who made his mark in the 1940s with his successful Ford-powered off-road trials cars.

Following the war, Allard shifted his focus from off-road competition to road racing, leading to the introduction of the J2 in 1949.
Sleeker and lower than its predecessor, the J1, the J2 was designed with a more aerodynamic and purposeful form, ideal for the emerging world of post-war sports car racing.

Engineered to harness the power of Detroit’s new generation of V8 engines, the J2 featured advanced technology for its time, including a De Dion rear axle, large Alfin drum brakes, and an evolution of Allard’s signature split front axle, designed by Les Bellamy.

Timing was key: the American sports car scene was booming, and enthusiasts were eager for competitive, race-ready machines. The J2 answered that call with immediate success both in the UK and across the Atlantic.

The Allard J2 model was announced in 1949 to much acclaim, and achieved early racing success in both the UK and America.

According to the Allard Registry, only 94 examples of the J2 were built, with just 82 known to survive today.

In 1950, Sydney Allard and Tom Cole famously campaigned a Cadillac-powered J2 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing an astonishing third overall. From that point forward, the Cadillac V8 replaced the earlier Mercury flathead as the engine of choice for the J2.

Combining a lightweight British chassis with raw American V8 power, the Allard J2 could sprint from 0–100 km/h in just 7 seconds—an extraordinary feat for the era. It is often regarded as a spiritual forerunner to the legendary AC Cobra.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

According to the late Allard historian Tom Lush, this chassis was delivered new to Finland in November 1951, one of only three J2s sent there.

Additional information from Lush’s archives indicates the car originally wore cream paintwork over a red interior. Period photographs show the car competing in Finnish motorsport events, including the Finnish Grand Prix in Helsinki.

The 1986 Allard Register confirms the car remained in Finland at that time, in the ownership of H. Sukman.

In the early 1990s, the car was acquired by renowned collector and Allard historian E. Dean Butler, who sold it as a restoration project to a fellow enthusiast in Cincinnati, Ohio. Restoration was entrusted to Zakira’s Garage, a respected shop known for its meticulous craftsmanship.
The body was restored in the UK by traditional craftsmen using the original bucks from the Allard factory. The restored chassis was paired with a fully rebuilt Cadillac 331 V8 and period-correct Ford 3-speed manual gearbox. The comprehensive restoration was completed in 2000.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

This J2 is finished in classic British Racing Green with color-matched wire wheels and a green leather cockpit.

The paintwork is of exceptional quality, with sharp body lines and precisely fitted panels.

This car wears a single side-mount spare wheel, properly mounted opposite the driver for optimal weight distribution.

Lucas King of the Road headlamps are supplemented by Lucas fogs, and this J2 sits with a wonderfully aggressive stance on the dark green wire wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilote X tires.



CONDITION INTERIOR

The cockpit is minimal and motorsport-focused, trimmed in dark green leather with matching green carpets.

Period correct instruments sit in the engine-turned alloy dash panel, with the only exception being the fuel gauge for the ATL fuel cell.

Other authentic touches include a Bluemels four-spoke steering wheel, twin aeroscreens, period-style lift-latch lap belts with shoulder harnesses, and a forward-braced roll bar.
